I know above Davy mentioned Custom Prolite, and my understanding is the Mapei Porcelain tile mortar at Lowes is either the same as or close to Ultraflex II. I can find the others in smaller sizes at least.Īt this point I guess I need to decide if I want to do a paint on membrane like Redguard/Aquadefense or a physical membrane like NobleSeal CIS. I had looked at strata mat, but the area I want to tile is under 50 square feet, and the smallest I can find Strata mat is a 150 sq ft. I had somehow missed NobleSeal CIS in my research, but it seems like an appealing option (not to mention, like Eric mentioned above, they are 45 min from my house). Thanks for all the responses/input everyone. You'll find the modified mortars, as a general rule, easier to work with, but some of the unmodified mortars are quite nice, too.

The only other one I'm aware of that does not require modified mortars allows the use of either modified or unmodified mortars.īut keep in mind also that the bonding requirement for thinset mortars to direct bonded waterproofing membranes and crack isolation membranes is only 50psi and that can easily be accomplished with either type of mortar. You'll also find that all but one of the other manufacturers of direct bonded waterproofing membranes and crack isolation membranes require the use of modified thinset mortars with their products. The bonding to the tiles can be substantially stronger when using modified thinset mortars meeting ANSI A118.4. There is, on the other hand, an established standard and required testing for Crack Isolation Membranes such as those from Noble Company mentioned above.Ģ.

Just trying to figure out my options and do it right. If I do use unmodified mortar under porcelain should I wait longer before grouting? If I use modified mortar under porcelain (over a membrane) how long should I wait before grouting? Could I use it unmodified and still use it on porcelain tile? Would a different unmodified be better? I may have found a local Laticrete distributor, but other than that I'm looking at Mapei and CBP.Ĥ.
Mapei specifies using their latex additive for porcelain tiles though. If I don't use porcelain tile I could use the same mortar to set the tile also. Thinset choices - Almost regardless of which membrane I'm planning to use Mapei's Unbonding Membrane Mortar to adhere the membrane to the concrete. Why do all the tile manufacturers specify modified thinset with porcelain?ģ. I would think that an unmodified mortar adhering porcelain would still be fine with good technique though. Are the other products greatly inferior in my situation (floor over basement concrete slab)? I like that the Redgard says you can use modified mortar to adhere the tile to the membrane while Ditra says unmodified. I know Ditra has by far the most data/testing. I have easy access to Ditra, Redgard's uncoupling membrane, and Prova Flex membrane. We (I mean my wife) haven't settled on a specific tile yet, but the short list are all tiles that are 12x12 or 12x24, primarily porcelain.ġ.
